Message from the Professor
Thank you for visiting our laboratory website.
The Division of Exercise Science, Graduate School of Medicine, Tohoku University was established in April 1993 and marked its 30th anniversary in 2023.
The first professor of this Division was Professor Hiroaki Omori, followed by Professor Ryoichi Nagatomi, who assumed the position in 2002. Professor Nagatomi, originally trained in immunology, has also made significant contributions to physical education, including teaching courses such as soccer. He currently serves as President of the Japanese Society of Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine.
In October 2024, I was appointed as the third professor of the Division. Prior to this role, I worked at the National Institute of Health and Nutrition, conducting research on physical activity, nutrition, and metabolism, while also promoting community-based programs to extend healthy life expectancy. Building on the Division’s strong foundation in exercise and health science, I aim to further advance both research and its practical applications.
Over the past three decades, many distinguished alumni have gone to successful careers as researchers and educators in Japan and abroad. We value these connections and strive to continue fostering a vibrant research community.
The origins of health and physical education at Tohoku University date back to 1949, when such courses were first introduced under the new national university system. Following educational reforms in 1991, the Division was reorganized within the Graduate School of Medicine, where it continues to advance research in exercise science while providing health and physical education courses to students across all faculties.
My primary appointment is in the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering, with a concurrent role in the Graduate School of Medicine. Established in 2008, the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering was Japan’s first independent graduate school dedicated to this field. With a long tradition of collaboration between medicine and engineering, our laboratory aims to apply biomedical technologies to sports and health sciences.
We welcome graduate students, research students, and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science fellows who are interested in collaborative research. We look forward to working together to advance the science of sports and health.
